Understanding Onion Toxicity in Dogs

What Makes Onions Toxic?

Onions contain N-propyl disulfide, a compound that damages red blood cells in dogs. This toxin causes oxidative damage leading to hemolysis (destruction of red blood cells), resulting in anemia and potentially life-threatening complications.

Why Dogs Are Vulnerable

  • Dogs lack sufficient antioxidant enzymes
  • Red blood cells are more susceptible to damage
  • Cannot metabolize sulfur compounds effectively
  • All forms (raw, cooked, powdered) are toxic

Toxicity Calculation

Toxic Dose = Weight(kg) × 2.5g

Serious Toxicity = Weight(kg) × 5g

  • 0.25% threshold: First toxic effects may appear
  • 0.5% threshold: Serious, potentially life-threatening
  • Small onion: ~100g (3.5 oz)
  • Medium onion: ~150g (5.3 oz)
  • Large onion: ~230g (8.1 oz)

Emergency Contact: If toxicity is suspected, contact your veterinarian or pet poison control immediately. Time is critical for treatment success.
