Amount of onion your dog consumed
Toxicity Assessment
Enter your dog's weight to calculate toxicity thresholds
Example Calculation
Medium Dog Example
Dog: Golden Retriever, 2 years old
Weight: 25 kg (55 lb)
Scenario: Ate 1/3 of a medium onion (~50g)
Other alliums: Also applies to garlic, leeks, chives
Risk Assessment
Toxic threshold: 25 kg × 2.5 = 62.5g
Serious toxicity: 25 kg × 5 = 125g
Amount consumed: 50g
Result: Below toxic threshold, but monitor closely
Toxicity Symptoms
Early Signs
Vomiting, decreased appetite
First 1-3 days
Progression
Panting, high heart rate
Days 2-4
Severe
Red/pink urine, yellow eyes
Hemolytic anemia
Prevention Tips
Keep all alliums away from dogs
Includes onions, garlic, leeks, chives
Raw, cooked, or powdered forms
Store foods securely

Understanding Onion Toxicity in Dogs
What Makes Onions Toxic?
Onions contain N-propyl disulfide, a compound that damages red blood cells in dogs. This toxin causes oxidative damage leading to hemolysis (destruction of red blood cells), resulting in anemia and potentially life-threatening complications.
Why Dogs Are Vulnerable
- •Dogs lack sufficient antioxidant enzymes
- •Red blood cells are more susceptible to damage
- •Cannot metabolize sulfur compounds effectively
- •All forms (raw, cooked, powdered) are toxic
Toxicity Calculation
Toxic Dose = Weight(kg) × 2.5g
Serious Toxicity = Weight(kg) × 5g
- 0.25% threshold: First toxic effects may appear
- 0.5% threshold: Serious, potentially life-threatening
- Small onion: ~100g (3.5 oz)
- Medium onion: ~150g (5.3 oz)
- Large onion: ~230g (8.1 oz)
Emergency Contact: If toxicity is suspected, contact your veterinarian or pet poison control immediately. Time is critical for treatment success.
