What is Cement?
Cement is a reactive powder component that binds fine and coarse aggregates together with water. It's made from pulverized limestone mixed with chemicals like lime and calcium silicate.
Cement vs. Concrete
- •Cement is the binding agent (10-15% of concrete)
- •Concrete = Cement + Sand + Gravel + Water
- •Mortar = Cement + Sand + Water (no gravel)
- •Portland cement is the most common type
Mix Ratio Calculation
Formula:

Where dry_volume = wet_volume × 1.54 (typical)
Water-Cement Ratio:
- • 0.4-0.5: High strength, low workability
- • 0.5-0.6: Good balance (recommended)
- • 0.6-0.7: Higher workability, lower strength
