Mix Ratio: 1:2:4 (Cement:Sand:Gravel)

Water-Cement Ratio: 0.5 (recommended for general use)

Material Parts: Cement: 1, Sand: 2, Gravel: 4

Mix Analysis

Example Calculation

Small Foundation Project

Project: 2m × 2m × 0.2m foundation (0.8 m³ wet volume)

Mix ratio: 1:2:4 (M15 grade concrete)

Dry volume: 0.8 × 1.54 = 1.232 m³

With 10% waste: 1.232 × 1.1 = 1.355 m³ total

Total parts: 1 + 2 + 4 = 7 parts

Material Breakdown

Cement volume: 1.355 × (1/7) = 0.194 m³

Cement weight: 0.194 × 1440 kg/m³ = 279 kg

Cement bags (50kg): 279 ÷ 50 = 6 bags

Sand: 0.388 m³, Gravel: 0.774 m³, Water: 139 L

Understanding Cement Calculations

What is Cement?

Cement is a reactive powder component that binds fine and coarse aggregates together with water. It's made from pulverized limestone mixed with chemicals like lime and calcium silicate.

Cement vs. Concrete

  • Cement is the binding agent (10-15% of concrete)
  • Concrete = Cement + Sand + Gravel + Water
  • Mortar = Cement + Sand + Water (no gravel)
  • Portland cement is the most common type

Mix Ratio Calculation

Formula:

V_component = dry_volume × (parts/total_parts)

Where dry_volume = wet_volume × 1.54 (typical)

Water-Cement Ratio:

  • • 0.4-0.5: High strength, low workability
  • • 0.5-0.6: Good balance (recommended)
  • • 0.6-0.7: Higher workability, lower strength

Concrete Strength Guide

1:5:10 (5.0 MPa):Mass concrete
1:4:8 (7.5 MPa):Foundations
1:2:4 (15.0 MPa):M15 - Residential
1:1.5:3 (20.0 MPa):M20 - Multi-story

Curing Guidelines

Initial set:30-60 minutes
Final set:10-12 hours
Early strength:7 days
Full strength:28 days
