Understanding Bar and PSIG Pressure Units
What is a Bar?
The bar is a metric unit of pressure equal to 100,000 pascals. It's widely used in engineering, meteorology, and industrial applications because it represents approximately one atmosphere of pressure at sea level.
Bar Characteristics
- •1 bar = 100,000 Pa (exactly)
- •1 bar = 14.5038 psi
- •Metric system unit
- •Commonly used internationally
What is PSIG?
PSIG (Pounds per Square Inch Gauge) measures pressure relative to atmospheric pressure. Unlike PSI absolute (PSIA), PSIG shows the pressure above or below atmospheric pressure, making it useful for practical applications where atmospheric pressure is the reference.
PSIG Characteristics
- •PSIG = PSI - 14.7 (atmospheric pressure)
- •0 PSIG = 1 atmosphere
- •Negative values possible
- •Common in industrial applications
Conversion Formulas
Bar to PSIG
PSIG = (bar × 14.5038) - 14.7
Example: 10 bar = (10 × 14.5038) - 14.7 = 130.338 PSIG
PSIG to Bar
bar = (PSIG + 14.7) ÷ 14.5038
Example: 130.338 PSIG = (130.338 + 14.7) ÷ 14.5038 = 10 bar
Important Notes
- • PSIG can be negative when pressure is below atmospheric pressure
- • The atmospheric pressure constant (14.7 PSI) is at sea level conditions
- • For high-altitude applications, atmospheric pressure varies
- • Always specify whether using gauge (PSIG) or absolute (PSIA) pressure
