Understanding Scale Conversion

What is a Scale Factor?

A scale factor is a ratio between two corresponding measurements. It represents how much the scaled object is enlarged or reduced compared to the original size.

Area and Volume Scaling

When scaling objects, different measurements scale differently:

  • Length: Scales by the scale factor (f)
  • Area: Scales by the scale factor squared (f²)
  • Volume: Scales by the scale factor cubed (f³)

Example

If you scale a cube by a factor of 2:

  • • Each side becomes 2× longer
  • • Each face becomes 4× larger (2²)
  • • The volume becomes 8× larger (2³)
