Understanding Bisexuality

Bisexuality is attraction to more than one gender. This can include attraction to:

  • People of your own gender and other genders
  • Multiple genders, but not necessarily equally
  • People regardless of gender

Common Misconceptions

Myth: Bisexual people are confused

Reality: Bisexuality is a valid, stable sexual orientation.

Myth: Bisexuals must be equally attracted to all genders

Reality: Attraction can vary in intensity and preference.

Myth: Bisexuals aren't truly part of LGBTQ+

Reality: Bisexual people are valued members of the queer community.

Understanding Sexual Orientation

What is Sexual Orientation?

Sexual orientation describes patterns of emotional, romantic, and/or sexual attraction. It's about who you're attracted to, not who you're currently dating or have dated in the past.

The Spectrum of Sexuality

Sexual orientation exists on a spectrum that includes:

  • Heterosexual: Attraction to a different gender
  • Homosexual (Gay/Lesbian): Attraction to the same gender
  • Bisexual: Attraction to more than one gender
  • Pansexual: Attraction regardless of gender
  • Asexual: Little to no sexual attraction

Bisexuality vs. Pansexuality

While often used interchangeably, these terms have nuanced differences. Bisexual typically means attraction to more than one gender, while pansexual emphasizes attraction regardless of gender. Many people identify with both terms or prefer one over the other based on personal preference.

Coming Out is Personal

There's no timeline for understanding or sharing your sexual orientation. Some people know from a young age, while others discover it later in life. Coming out is a personal decision, and you should only do so when you feel safe and ready.

Remember: Your identity is valid regardless of your relationship history, and it's okay if your understanding of your sexuality evolves over time.
