What is a Dilution Ratio?

A dilution ratio expresses the relationship between the amount of concentrate and the amount of solvent (usually water) in a mixture. For example, a 1:10 ratio means 1 part concentrate to 10 parts solvent, resulting in 11 total parts.

Types of Dilution Ratios

  • Parts Ratio: 1:10 means 1 part concentrate + 10 parts solvent = 11 total parts
  • Volume Ratio: Direct proportion of volumes to mix
  • Concentration: Percentage of active ingredient in final solution

Calculation Methods

Ratio to Volume

Concentrate Volume = (Total Volume × Concentrate Parts) ÷ Total Parts

Example: For 1:10 ratio in 1000mL total: (1000 × 1) ÷ 11 = 91mL concentrate

Concentration Dilution
