The Science Behind Love

✨ Attraction

Dopamine and norepinephrine create feelings of euphoria and obsessive thinking.

🤝 Attachment

Oxytocin and vasopressin foster deep bonding and long-term commitment.

Understanding Love: Lust, Attraction & Attachment

What Happens in Your Brain When You Fall in Love?

When you fall in love, unique regions of your brain light up in strange and new ways. These phenomena can change the way you think, feel, and behave. Love can include a combination of three key experiences: lust, attraction, and attachment—though each can occur independently.

💥 Lust

Driven by a desire for sexual pleasure and gratification. When someone turns you on, your body produces more sex hormones (testosterone or estrogen), making it hard to focus on anything else.

✨ Attraction

When we feel magnetically drawn to someone, our brains release dopamine and norepinephrine as a reward. These "happy chemicals" can reduce appetite and cause insomnia—explaining why you can't eat or sleep when you're attracted to someone!

🤝 Attachment

When someone becomes an important part of your life, you experience attachment. In long-term romantic relationships, attachment becomes key. Your brain releases oxytocin and vasopressin, creating deep bonds.

"Love is a smoke raised with the fume of sighs; Being purged, a fire sparkling in lovers' eyes; Being vexed, a sea nourished with loving tears. What is it else? A madness most discreet, A choking gall, and a preserving sweet."

— William Shakespeare
