How the Quilt Calculator Works

1. Standard Overage

We automatically add 4 inches (10.16 cm) to all sides of your quilt top dimensions. This provides 8 inches total additional width and length for proper quilting overhang.

2. Fabric Orientation

Directional fabrics: Have patterns that need to face the same direction (like animals or text). The bolt width aligns with the quilt width.

Non-directional fabrics: Can be rotated for efficiency, allowing better fabric utilization.

3. Fabric Calculation

Based on your quilt size and bolt width, we determine if you need one, two, or three pieces of fabric and how to cut them efficiently.

4. Batting Requirements

Batting uses the same dimensions as backing but is typically sold in standard sizes or by the yard from wide bolts.

💡 Quilting Tips

  • • Always buy a little extra fabric to account for shrinkage and cutting errors
  • • Consider fabric width variations - some quilting cottons are 42-45" wide
  • • Batting can extend beyond backing slightly for easier basting
  • • Pre-wash your fabric if you plan to wash the finished quilt
  • • For large quilts, consider piecing the backing for a more interesting design
