Understanding the American Rescue Plan Act
What is the American Rescue Plan?
The American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 is a $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package that provided a third round of direct payments to eligible Americans. Signed into law by President Biden on March 11, 2021, it expanded relief beyond the CARES Act and December 2020 package.
Key Differences from Previous Stimulus
- •All dependents of any age qualify for $1,400
- •Stricter income limits with faster phase-out
- •Higher payments for families with children
- •Enhanced Child Tax Credit provisions
Phase-out Calculation
How Phase-out Works
Unlike previous stimulus checks, the American Rescue Plan uses a linear phase-out. Your payment reduces proportionally based on income above the threshold until it reaches zero at the upper limit.
Timeline
Payments began in March 2021 and continued through 2021. The IRS used 2019 or 2020 tax returns (whichever was most recently filed) to determine eligibility and payment amounts.
