Understanding Employee Provident Fund (EPF)
What is EPF?
The Employee Provident Fund (EPF) is a retirement savings scheme for salaried employees in India. It's managed by the Employee Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) under the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India.
How EPF Works
- •Both employee and employer contribute 12% of basic salary + DA
- •Employer's contribution is split between EPF and EPS
- •Interest is compounded monthly and credited annually
- •Withdrawal allowed after retirement or in emergencies
EPF Calculation Formula
Monthly Contribution:
Employee = (Basic + DA) × 12%
Employer = Variable (see rules)
Maturity Amount:
FV = PMT × [((1+r)^n - 1) / r]
Where r = monthly interest rate
n = number of months
Benefits of EPF
Tax Benefits: Triple tax exemption (EEE status)
Guaranteed Returns: Government-backed assured returns
Employer Matching: Free money from employer contribution
Liquidity: Partial withdrawal allowed for specific purposes
