Understanding Coffee Ratios

What Are Coffee Ratios?

Coffee ratios express the relationship between coffee grounds and water used in brewing. They're written as coffee:water (e.g., 1:15 means 1g coffee per 15ml water). Different brewing methods require different ratios to achieve optimal flavor extraction.

Why Ratios Matter

  • Ensures consistent flavor every time
  • Prevents over or under-extraction
  • Optimizes coffee strength and taste
  • Reduces waste and improves efficiency

Calculation Method

Our calculator uses the standard formula for determining coffee and water amounts:

Total parts = Coffee parts + Water parts

Coffee amount = (Volume ÷ Total parts) × Coffee parts

Water amount = (Volume ÷ Total parts) × Water parts

Note: We assume 1ml = 1g for ground coffee. Some methods like espresso account for water absorption during brewing.
