Understanding the AUDIT Test
What is AUDIT?
The Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) is a 10-question screening tool developed by the World Health Organization. It's designed to identify persons who have alcohol use disorders, including alcohol dependence and hazardous or harmful alcohol consumption.
Test Components
- •Questions 1-3: Alcohol consumption patterns
- •Questions 4-6: Alcohol dependence symptoms
- •Questions 7-8: Harmful alcohol use
- •Questions 9-10: Alcohol-related problems
Scoring System
Questions 1-8 are scored 0-4 points each, while questions 9-10 are scored 0, 2, or 4 points. The maximum total score is 40 points. Different thresholds apply for men and women due to biological differences in alcohol metabolism.
Dependence Alert
Score ≥4 on questions 4-6 suggests alcohol dependence
Problem Alert
Any points on questions 9-10 indicate alcohol-related harm
Important: AUDIT is a screening tool, not a diagnostic test. High scores require professional medical evaluation for proper diagnosis and treatment planning.
