Calculate Body Adiposity Index to estimate body fat percentage using hip and height measurements
Calculate Body Adiposity Index (BAI)
Required for accurate BAI classification
Age affects BAI classification ranges
Height in centimeters
Measure around the widest part of your hips
📏 How to Measure Hip Circumference
- • Stand with feet together
- • Place tape measure around the widest part of your hips/buttocks
- • Keep tape measure parallel to the floor
- • Don't pull too tight - tape should be snug but not compressing
- • Take measurement at the end of a normal exhale

BAI Classification Tables
Women
Age Range | Underweight | Healthy | Overweight | Obese |
---|---|---|---|---|
20-39 | < 21% | 21-33% | 33-39% | > 39% |
40-59 | < 23% | 23-35% | 35-41% | > 41% |
60-79 | < 25% | 25-38% | 38-43% | > 43% |
Men
Age Range | Underweight | Healthy | Overweight | Obese |
---|---|---|---|---|
20-39 | < 8% | 8-21% | 21-26% | > 26% |
40-59 | < 11% | 11-23% | 23-29% | > 29% |
60-79 | < 13% | 13-25% | 25-31% | > 31% |
Example Calculation
Example: 30-year-old Male
Height: 180 cm (1.8 m)
Hip Circumference: 102 cm
Calculation: BAI = (102 / 1.8^1.5) - 18
Step 1: 1.8^1.5 = 2.424
Step 2: 102 / 2.424 = 42.1
Step 3: 42.1 - 18 = 24.1%
Result: BAI = 24.1% (Overweight category for males 20-39)
Example: 45-year-old Female
Height: 165 cm (1.65 m)
Hip Circumference: 98 cm
Calculation: BAI = (98 / 1.65^1.5) - 18
Step 1: 1.65^1.5 = 2.122
Step 2: 98 / 2.122 = 46.2
Step 3: 46.2 - 18 = 28.2%
Result: BAI = 28.2% (Healthy category for females 40-59)
BAI vs BMI
About Body Adiposity Index
BAI estimates body fat percentage without requiring weight
Based on the relationship between hip circumference and height
More accurate for some populations than BMI
Classifications vary by age and sex
Should be used alongside other health assessments
Understanding Body Adiposity Index (BAI)
What is BAI?
Body Adiposity Index (BAI) is a method to estimate body fat percentage using only hip circumference and height measurements. Unlike BMI, BAI doesn't require weight measurements and provides a direct estimate of body fat percentage.
Advantages of BAI
- •No weight measurement required
- •Directly estimates body fat percentage
- •Age and sex-specific classification ranges
- •May be more accurate for certain populations
How BAI Works
BAI = (Hip Circumference / Height^1.5) - 18
Hip circumference in cm, Height in meters
Limitations
- •Not suitable for athletes with high muscle mass
- •May not be accurate for all ethnicities
- •Requires accurate hip circumference measurement
- •Should be used with other health assessments
Medical Disclaimer: BAI is a screening tool and should not replace professional medical assessment. Consult healthcare providers for comprehensive health evaluation and body composition analysis.
