What is Cefdinir?

Cefdinir (brand name Omnicef) is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections. It works by disrupting bacterial cell wall synthesis, effectively killing susceptible bacteria.

Approved Indications

  • Community-acquired pneumonia
  • Acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis
  • Acute maxillary sinusitis
  • Pharyngitis and tonsillitis
  • Uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections
  • Acute bacterial otitis media (pediatric)

Dosing Guidelines

Adult Dosing:

  • • Standard: 300 mg every 12 hours OR 600 mg every 24 hours
  • • Pneumonia/Skin infections: 300 mg every 12 hours only
  • • Kidney impairment (GFR <30): 300 mg once daily

Pediatric Dosing:

  • • Standard: 7 mg/kg every 12 hours OR 14 mg/kg every 24 hours
  • • Children ≥42.7 kg: Use adult dosing
  • • Kidney impairment: 7 mg/kg once daily
  • • Maximum: 600 mg daily

Important: Always complete the full course of antibiotics as prescribed, even if symptoms improve before finishing the medication.
