EASI Score Calculator

Eczema Area and Severity Index - Assess atopic dermatitis severity

EASI Score Assessment

Different weighting factors are used based on age group

Assess Each Body Region

For each body region, select the percentage of area affected and rate the severity of each symptom (0-3 scale).

Head and Neck

Head and Neck Summary: Area 0 × Severity 0 × Factor 0.1 = 0.0

Trunk

Trunk Summary: Area 0 × Severity 0 × Factor 0.3 = 0.0

Upper Limbs

Upper Limbs Summary: Area 0 × Severity 0 × Factor 0.2 = 0.0

Lower Limbs

Lower Limbs Summary: Area 0 × Severity 0 × Factor 0.4 = 0.0

Clinical Recommendations

Maintain good skincare habits: moisturize regularly, avoid harsh soaps, and use sunscreen.

Example EASI Score Calculation

Patient Example (Adult)

Age: Over 8 years (uses adult factors)

Head/Neck: 10% area (score 2), mild redness (1), no other symptoms

Calculation: 2 × 1 × 0.1 = 0.2

Trunk: 30% area (score 3), moderate symptoms (total 6)

Calculation: 3 × 6 × 0.3 = 5.4

Total Score

Head/Neck: 0.2 + Trunk: 5.4 + Upper Limbs: 0 + Lower Limbs: 0

Total EASI Score: 5.6 (Mild severity)

Different factors account for body surface area proportions in children vs. adults

Understanding the EASI Score

What is EASI?

The Eczema Area and Severity Index (EASI) is a validated clinical tool used to assess the severity and extent of atopic dermatitis (eczema). It combines both the area of skin affected and the intensity of clinical signs.

Clinical Applications

  • Monitoring disease progression and treatment response
  • Clinical trial endpoints for eczema research
  • Standardized communication between healthcare providers
  • Treatment decision-making and therapy adjustments

Assessment Components

Area Assessment

Percentage of each body region affected, scored 0-6 based on involvement ranges from 0% to 90-100%.

Severity Assessment

Four clinical signs evaluated on 0-3 scale: redness (erythema), thickness (induration/papulation), scratching (excoriation), and lichenification.

Calculation Formula

Region Score = Area × Severity Sum × Age Factor
EASI = Sum of all region scores

Important Clinical Notes

• The EASI score requires clinical expertise to assess severity accurately

• Inter-rater reliability improves with training and experience

• Should be used alongside other clinical assessments and patient-reported outcomes

• Different age-based factors account for body surface area proportions in children vs. adults
