Body Fat Analysis
Example Calculation
Navy Male Example (6ft tall)
Height: 6 ft (182.9 cm)
Neck circumference: 15.2 inches (38.6 cm)
Waist circumference: 40.2 inches (102.1 cm)
Calculation
Waist - Neck = 102.1 - 38.6 = 63.5 cm
%BF = 495 / (1.0324 − 0.19077 × log₁₀(63.5) + 0.15456 × log₁₀(182.9)) − 450
Result: ≈ 26.8% body fat
Navy Body Fat Standards
Age | Male | Female |
---|---|---|
18-21 | 22% | 33% |
22-29 | 23% | 34% |
30-39 | 24% | 35% |
40+ | 26% | 36% |
Note: These are maximum allowable body fat percentages for U.S. Navy personnel.
Measurement Tips
Use a non-stretchable measuring tape for accuracy
Take all measurements horizontally and parallel to the floor
Remove shoes and wear minimal clothing
Measure at the same time of day for consistency
Breathe normally during measurements
Understanding Navy Body Fat Standards
What is the Navy Body Fat Test?
The U.S. Navy body fat test is a circumference-based measurement method developed by the Naval Health Research Center (NHRC) in San Diego, California. It's used to assess body composition and ensure naval personnel meet physical fitness standards required for military service.
Why Are These Standards Important?
- •Ensure naval readiness and operational capability
- •Maintain professional military appearance
- •Promote overall health and fitness
- •Meet deployment and sea duty requirements
Navy Formula Explanation
Male Formula:
%BF = 495 / (1.0324 − 0.19077 × log₁₀(waist − neck) + 0.15456 × log₁₀(height)) − 450
Female Formula:
%BF = 495 / (1.29579 − 0.35004 × log₁₀(waist + hip − neck) + 0.22100 × log₁₀(height)) − 450
- %BF: Body fat percentage
- Measurements: All in centimeters (metric units)
- log₁₀: Base-10 logarithm
- Constants: Empirically derived coefficients from NHRC research
Accuracy: The Navy method is considered one of the most accurate circumference-based body fat estimation techniques, better than BMI for differentiating lean and fat mass.
Proper Measurement Technique
Height
Stand straight and barefoot against a wall. Look straight ahead and measure from floor to top of head.
Neck
Measure just underneath the larynx (Adam's apple). Keep head in normal position.
Waist
For men: at navel level. For women: at narrowest part of abdomen. Breathe normally.
