Example Calculations

Male Example

Height: 180 cm (5 feet 11 inches)

Waist: 85 cm (33.5 inches)

RFM Calculation: 64 - (20 × 180/85) = 64 - 42.4 = 21.6%

Category: Average (18-24%)

Assessment: Healthy body fat level for men

Female Example

Height: 165 cm (5 feet 5 inches)

Waist: 70 cm (27.6 inches)

RFM Calculation: 76 - (20 × 165/70) = 76 - 47.1 = 28.9%

Category: Average (25-31%)

Assessment: Healthy body fat level for women

RFM vs BMI Advantage

RFM Benefits: No weight measurement needed

Accuracy: Better correlation with DEXA scan results

Application: Less affected by muscle mass

Simplicity: Only two measurements required

Understanding Relative Fat Mass (RFM)

What is RFM?

Relative Fat Mass (RFM) is a new metric developed in 2018 by researchers at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. It estimates body fat percentage using only height and waist circumference, making it more practical and accurate than BMI for assessing obesity.

Scientific Foundation

RFM was developed using data from over 12,000 adults and validated against DEXA scans (the gold standard for body composition). It showed better correlation with actual body fat percentage compared to BMI.

Key Advantages

  • No weight measurement required
  • More accurate than BMI for body fat estimation
  • Accounts for central obesity (belly fat)
  • Less affected by muscle mass

RFM Formulas

For Men:
RFM = 64 - (20 × Height/Waist)

For Women:
RFM = 76 - (20 × Height/Waist)

Clinical Applications

  • !Obesity screening and diagnosis
  • !Cardiovascular risk assessment
  • !Fitness and health monitoring
  • !Alternative to BMI in research

Medical Disclaimer: RFM is a screening tool and should not replace professional medical assessment. Always consult healthcare providers for accurate diagnosis and treatment.
