Example GPA Calculation
High School Student (Weighted GPA)
Math (AP): A → 4.0 + 1.0 = 5.0 points
Biology: C+ → 2.3 points
History (Honors): B → 3.0 + 0.5 = 3.5 points
English: A- → 3.7 points
Calculation
Weighted GPA = (5.0 + 2.3 + 3.5 + 3.7) ÷ 4 = 14.5 ÷ 4 = 3.63
Unweighted GPA = (4.0 + 2.3 + 3.0 + 3.7) ÷ 4 = 13.0 ÷ 4 = 3.25

Understanding GPA Calculations
What is GPA?
GPA stands for Grade Point Average. It's a numerical representation of your academic performance calculated by averaging the grade points earned in all your courses. The standard scale ranges from 0.0 to 4.0, though some schools use a 4.3 scale.
Types of GPA
- •Unweighted GPA: Standard calculation without course difficulty consideration
- •Weighted GPA: Gives extra points for honors, AP, IB, and college courses
- •Cumulative GPA: Overall GPA across multiple terms or semesters
GPA Calculation Formulas
Basic GPA (No Credits)
GPA = Sum of Grade Points ÷ Number of Courses
Credit-Weighted GPA
GPA = Sum(Grade Points × Credits) ÷ Total Credits
Cumulative GPA
Cumulative = (Prior GPA × Prior Credits + New GPA × New Credits) ÷ Total Credits
