Your GWA Results

Enter your course grades and units above to see your GWA calculation

Formula: GWA = Σ(Grade × Units) ÷ Σ(Units)

Grading System: Grade Point Scale (1.00-5.00)

Example GWA Calculation

Sample Student Grades

Mathematics: 1.50 (5 units)

Science: 2.25 (3 units)

Arts: 1.00 (3 units)

Step-by-Step Calculation

1. Calculate weighted grades: (1.50 × 5) + (2.25 × 3) + (1.00 × 3)

2. Sum of weighted grades: 7.50 + 6.75 + 3.00 = 17.25

3. Total units: 5 + 3 + 3 = 11

4. GWA = 17.25 ÷ 11 = 1.57

Result: 1.57 GWA (Good performance)

GWA: 1.00-1.25 (1.00-5.00 scale) or 3.75-4.00 (4.00-1.00 scale)

Magna Cum Laude

GWA: 1.26-1.50 (1.00-5.00 scale) or 3.50-3.74 (4.00-1.00 scale)

Cum Laude

GWA: 1.51-1.75 (1.00-5.00 scale) or 3.25-3.49 (4.00-1.00 scale)

GWA Calculator Tips

Major courses typically have more units than minor courses

You can add up to 30 courses for comprehensive calculation

Choose the grading system used by your institution

GWA considers both grades and course importance (units)

Lower GWA is better in 1.00-5.00 scale systems

Understanding General Weighted Average (GWA)

What is GWA?

GWA, or General Weighted Average, is the standard grading system used in Philippine colleges and universities to assess overall academic performance. Unlike simple averages, GWA considers the importance (weight) of each course based on its credit units.

Why Use Weighted Averaging?

  • Major courses typically carry more units than minor courses
  • Reflects the true academic workload and performance
  • Provides fair assessment across different course types
  • Standard for academic honors and graduation requirements

GWA Formula

GWA = Σ(Grade × Units) ÷ Σ(Units)

  • Σ(Grade × Units): Sum of all grade-unit products
  • Σ(Units): Total number of units taken
  • Grade: Numerical value based on grading system
  • Units: Credit hours or course weight

Note: Different institutions use different grading scales. Always verify which system your school uses before calculating your GWA.

Philippine Grading Systems

1.00-5.00 Scale (Traditional)

1.00 is the highest grade, 5.00 is failing

• 1.00-1.25: Excellent (Summa Cum Laude)

• 1.26-1.50: Very Good (Magna Cum Laude)

• 1.51-1.75: Good (Cum Laude)

• 3.00: Passing grade

• 5.00: Failed

4.00-1.00 Scale (Modern)

4.00 is the highest grade, 1.00 is failing

• 3.75-4.00: Excellent (Summa Cum Laude)

• 3.50-3.74: Very Good (Magna Cum Laude)

• 3.25-3.49: Good (Cum Laude)

• 2.00: Passing grade

• 1.00: Failed
