Understanding Hit Points in D&D 5e

What are Hit Points?

Hit Points (HP) represent your character's physical health, stamina, and will to live. When you take damage, you lose hit points. At 0 HP, your character falls unconscious and begins making death saving throws.

HP Calculation Formula

HP = Hit Dice Rolls + (Con Modifier × Level) + Racial/Feat Bonuses

  • Level 1: Maximum hit die value + Constitution modifier
  • Higher levels: Roll hit die + Constitution modifier
  • Add racial and feat bonuses

Multiclassing Rules

When multiclassing, track hit dice from each class separately. Your first class (the one you started with at level 1) determines your initial HP calculation.
