Example Calculation
iPhone X vs iPhone 8 Plus
iPhone X: 5.85" diagonal, 2.17:1 aspect ratio
Width: 5.85" ÷ √((2.17)² + 1) = 5.85" ÷ 2.39 = 2.45"
Height: 2.17 × 2.45" = 5.32"
Area: 2.45" × 5.32" = 13.03 in²
iPhone 8 Plus
Specs: 5.5" diagonal, 16:9 aspect ratio
Width: 5.5" ÷ √((16/9)² + 1) = 4.8"
Height: (16/9) × 2.7" = 4.8"
Area: 4.8" × 2.7" = 12.96 in²

Understanding Screen Size Calculations
How Screen Size is Measured
Screen size is typically measured diagonally from corner to corner, similar to how TV sizes are advertised. However, the diagonal measurement alone doesn't tell you the actual width and height dimensions, which depend on the aspect ratio.
Key Formulas
- •Height: diagonal ÷ √(AR² + 1)
- •Width: aspect ratio × height
- •Area: width × height
- •Diagonal: √(width² + height²)
Curved vs Flat Screens
Flat screens: Standard rectangular displays where diagonal = √(width² + height²)
Curved screens: Follow an arc with additional depth calculations
Practical Applications
- •TV mounting and furniture sizing
- •Monitor setup planning
- •Display comparison and selection
- •Space requirements planning
