How to Calculate Test Grades
Basic Formula
Percentage = (Correct Answers ÷ Total Questions) × 100
The percentage score is simply the ratio of correct answers to total possible answers, multiplied by 100 to get a percentage.
Alternative Formula
Percentage = 100 × (Total - Wrong) ÷ Total
You can also calculate by subtracting wrong answers from the total, then dividing by total questions.
Step-by-Step Process
- 1.Count the total number of questions or points possible
- 2.Count the number of correct answers or points earned
- 3.Divide correct by total to get decimal score
- 4.Multiply by 100 to convert to percentage
- 5.Compare to grading scale to get letter grade
Example
A student scores 27 out of 40 questions correctly:
27 ÷ 40 = 0.675
0.675 × 100 = 67.5%
Letter Grade: D+ (passing grade)
