How to Calculate Test Grades

Basic Formula

Percentage = (Correct Answers ÷ Total Questions) × 100

The percentage score is simply the ratio of correct answers to total possible answers, multiplied by 100 to get a percentage.

Alternative Formula

Percentage = 100 × (Total - Wrong) ÷ Total

You can also calculate by subtracting wrong answers from the total, then dividing by total questions.

Step-by-Step Process

  1. 1.Count the total number of questions or points possible
  2. 2.Count the number of correct answers or points earned
  3. 3.Divide correct by total to get decimal score
  4. 4.Multiply by 100 to convert to percentage
  5. 5.Compare to grading scale to get letter grade

Example

A student scores 27 out of 40 questions correctly:

27 ÷ 40 = 0.675

0.675 × 100 = 67.5%

Letter Grade: D+ (passing grade)
