Pace & Speed Results

Calculation Formulas

Pace (min/km) = Time (minutes) ÷ Distance (km)
Speed (km/h) = Distance (km) ÷ Time (hours)
Speed = 3600 ÷ Pace (seconds per km)

Example Calculation

5K Run Example

Distance: 5 km

Time: 25 minutes

Calculation: 25 min ÷ 5 km = 5 min/km

Results

Pace: 5:00 min/km

Speed: 12.0 km/h

Level: Average recreational runner

Training Tips

Track your pace consistently to monitor progress

Use 80/20 rule: 80% easy pace, 20% hard training

Gradually increase distance before improving pace

Include interval training to improve speed

Rest and recovery are essential for improvement

Understanding Pace vs. Speed

What is Pace?

Pace is the amount of time it takes to cover a specific distance. It's expressed as time per unit of distance (e.g., minutes per kilometer or minutes per mile). Pace is the most common way runners think about their performance.

What is Speed?

Speed is the distance covered in a specific amount of time. It's expressed as distance per unit of time (e.g., kilometers per hour or miles per hour). Speed is the inverse of pace and is often used for comparison with other activities.

Key Differences

  • Pace: How long to cover 1 unit of distance
  • Speed: How much distance in 1 unit of time
  • Runners prefer pace for training and racing
  • Speed is useful for comparing different activities

Conversion Formulas

Pace to Speed: Speed = 60 ÷ Pace (min/km)

Speed to Pace: Pace = 60 ÷ Speed (km/h)

km/h to mph: mph = km/h × 0.621371

min/km to min/mile: min/mile = min/km × 1.609344

Training Applications

  • Easy Runs: Conversational pace, 60-70% max HR
  • Tempo Runs: Comfortably hard, 80-85% max HR
  • Intervals: Hard effort, 85-95% max HR
  • Recovery: Very easy, below 60% max HR
