Understanding Passer Rating

What is Passer Rating?

Passer rating (also called quarterback rating) is a comprehensive statistic that measures a quarterback's overall performance. It combines completion percentage, yards per attempt, touchdown percentage, and interception percentage into a single number.

Why Use Passer Rating?

  • Provides holistic view of QB performance
  • Standardized metric across leagues
  • Correlates strongly with team success
  • Easy comparison between quarterbacks

NFL vs NCAA Formulas

NFL/CFL Formula:

((a + b + c + d) / 6) × 100

  • a = ((completions/attempts) - 0.3) × 5
  • b = ((yards/attempts) - 3) × 0.25
  • c = (touchdowns/attempts) × 20
  • d = 2.375 - (interceptions/attempts) × 25

NCAA Formula:

((8.4 × yards) + (330 × TD) + (100 × completions) - (200 × INT)) / attempts
