Rolling Tips
Natural 20 on attack rolls is always a critical hit
Natural 1 on attack rolls is always a miss
Advantage: roll twice, take the higher result
Disadvantage: roll twice, take the lower result
Understanding D&D Dice Rolling
Dice Notation
D&D uses a standard notation system to describe dice rolls. The format is XdY+Z, where X is the number of dice, Y is the number of sides, and Z is the modifier.
Examples
- 1d20+5: Roll one 20-sided die and add 5
- 2d6: Roll two 6-sided dice and add them together
- 3d8+2: Roll three 8-sided dice, sum them, and add 2
- 1d100: Roll percentile dice (0-100)
Advantage & Disadvantage
These mechanics modify how d20 rolls work in D&D 5th Edition:
Advantage
Roll 2d20, take the higher result. Approximately 25% better chance of success.
Disadvantage
Roll 2d20, take the lower result. Approximately 25% worse chance of success.
Probability Mathematics
Understanding dice probabilities helps in tactical decision-making:
Standard d20
5% chance for any specific number
50% chance to roll 10 or higher
With Advantage
0.25% chance for natural 1
9.75% chance for natural 20
With Disadvantage
9.75% chance for natural 1
0.25% chance for natural 20
