Understanding Roulette Mathematics
How Roulette Works
Roulette is a casino game where players bet on where a ball will land on a spinning wheel. The wheel contains numbered pockets from 0-36 (European) or 0-36 plus 00 (American). The extra 00 in American roulette increases the house edge significantly.
Probability Calculation
The probability of winning any bet is calculated as:
P(win) = Winning Numbers ÷ Total Numbers
Example: Red bet in European roulette
18 red numbers ÷ 37 total numbers = 48.65% win probability
Payout Formula
Payout = (36 ÷ Spaces Covered) - 1
This gives the payout ratio for any bet type
House Edge
European: 2.70% house edge (1 zero)
American: 5.26% house edge (2 zeros)
The house edge represents the casino's mathematical advantage. This means that over time, players will lose this percentage of all money wagered.
Expected Value
The average amount you can expect to win or lose per bet. For roulette, this is always negative due to the house edge.
Return to Player (RTP)
The percentage of all wagered money that is returned to players over time. European: 97.3%, American: 94.74%.
Volatility
Inside bets have high volatility (big wins/losses), while outside bets have low volatility (frequent small wins/losses).
