Calculate Bulb Spacing
Planting Grid Pattern
Plants arranged in straight rows and columns
Garden Bed Size
Border Spacing
Distance from garden bed edge to first row of plants
Bulb Type
Type: Perennial
Height: 15-60 cm (6-24 in)
Planting: Fall (September-November)
Flowering: Spring (March-May)
Sun: Full sun to partial shade
Spacing Requirements
Cost Estimation (Optional)
Average bulb prices: $0.25-$2.00 depending on type and quality
Planting Results
Calculation: Rectangular grid pattern
Effective area: 0.00 m × 0.00 m = 0.00 sq m
Plant spacing: 10 centimeters between plants, 10 centimeters between rows
Plant: Fall (September-November)
Flowers: Spring (March-May)
Depth: 15-20 cm (6-8 in)
Planting Tips
Example Calculation
Tulip Garden Example
Garden bed: 3m × 2m = 6 sq m
Border: 0.1m from edges
Bulb type: Tulips (10cm spacing)
Grid pattern: Rectangular
Calculation Result
Effective area: 2.8m × 1.8m = 5.04 sq m
Plants per row: 2.8m ÷ 0.1m = 28 plants
Number of rows: 1.8m ÷ 0.1m = 18 rows
Total bulbs: 28 × 18 = 504 tulip bulbs

Understanding Bulb Spacing
Grid Pattern Comparison
Rectangular Grid
Traditional pattern with plants in straight rows. Easier to maintain and harvest, but uses space less efficiently.
Triangular Grid
Offset rows allow 15-20% more plants in the same space. Creates more natural appearance but slightly more complex to plan.
Spacing Considerations
- •Mature size: Consider full-grown plant width
- •Air circulation: Prevent disease with adequate spacing
- •Visual impact: Closer spacing creates denser display
- •Maintenance: Consider access for weeding and care
Bulb Planting & Care Guide
Soil Preparation
Prepare well-draining soil with organic matter. Test pH and adjust to 6.0-7.0 for most bulbs. Avoid waterlogged conditions.
Planting Depth
Plant at 2-3 times the bulb height. Pointed end up, flat end down. Add bone meal or bulb fertilizer to planting holes.
After Care
Water after planting, mulch for winter protection. Allow foliage to die back naturally to feed next year's blooms.
