Understanding the HEALS Act
What is the HEALS Act?
The Health, Economic Assistance, Liability Protection & Schools (HEALS) Act was a proposed $1 trillion coronavirus relief package introduced by Republican senators in July 2020 as a follow-up to the CARES Act.
Key Features
- •Second round of stimulus checks ($1,200/$2,400)
- •$500 for dependents of any age (unlike CARES Act)
- •Reduced unemployment benefits ($200/week vs $600)
- •Second round of PPP loans for small businesses
Eligibility Requirements
Must Have Filed Taxes
You must have filed your 2019 tax return or 2018 if 2019 is not available. This is how the IRS determines your eligibility and payment amount.
Social Security Number Required
Both you and your dependents must have valid Social Security numbers. This follows the same requirements as the CARES Act.
Historical Note: The HEALS Act was never passed. The final December 2020 relief package included $600 stimulus payments instead.
