Example Calculation
Adult Example
Height: 170 cm (5 feet 7 inches)
Weight: 75 kg (165 lbs)
BMI Calculation: 75 ÷ (1.70)² = 75 ÷ 2.89 = 26.0
BMI Category: Overweight (25-29.9)
Ponderal Index: 75 ÷ (1.70)³ = 75 ÷ 4.91 = 15.3
PI Category: Normal weight (11-15)
Child Example (2 years old)
Height: 85 cm
Weight: 12 kg
BMI Calculation: 12 ÷ (0.85)² = 12 ÷ 0.72 = 16.6
Ponderal Index: (12,000 × 100) ÷ (85)³ = 1,200,000 ÷ 614,125 = 2.0
PI Category: Underweight (< 2.2 for children under 6)
BMI Categories
Ponderal Index Categories
Adults & Children (6+)
Children (Under 6)
Health Tips
BMI and Ponderal Index are screening tools, not diagnostic tools
Ponderal Index may be more accurate for children and adolescents
Both indices don't distinguish between muscle and fat mass
Always consult healthcare providers for personalized health advice
Understanding Overweight and Obesity Assessment
What is BMI?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is calculated by dividing weight by the square of height. BMI between 25-30 is considered overweight, while BMI over 30 indicates obesity. It's the most commonly used screening tool for weight categories.
Why Use Both BMI and Ponderal Index?
- •BMI is standard for adults but may be less accurate for children
- •Ponderal Index may better reflect body composition in youth
- •Using both provides a more comprehensive assessment
- •Helps identify potential weight-related health risks
What is Ponderal Index?
For Adults & Children 6+:
PI = Weight (kg) ÷ Height (m)³
For Children Under 6:
PI = Weight (g) × 100 ÷ Height (cm)³
- !Less affected by height variations than BMI
- !May be more accurate for tall or short individuals
- !Different formulas and ranges for different age groups
- !Useful complementary measure to BMI
